This summer, we said goodbye to our sweet fur baby of 18 years. Eighteen years… it still amazes me to say that number out loud. When you love a pet for that long, they stop being “a pet” somewhere along the way. They become a little heartbeat that you love more each day.
From the moment we brought her home, our little girl had some minor health issues. That meant extra care, extra watching, extra soothing—and in return, an extraordinary bond. Over time, it all became second nature, an expression of love we never questioned. These past few years, when mobility grew harder with age, she slowed down and was content to be carried, to move gently through the house, to rest in warm laps and soft blankets

So when the holidays began approaching this year, our hearts sank. How do you celebrate when the one who made every season brighter isn’t here? She wasn’t tearing into wrapping paper anymore at her age or chasing her Christmas toys that she loved so much, but her presence always filled the house in a way that made it feel whole. She completed us.
Still, if there’s one thing that lifts my spirit—one thing that anchors me when emotions swirl—it’s decorating. And yes, I knew it would be hard this year. Santa and candy canes weren’t going to cut it. Not this year.
So I leaned into what the season was already destined to be: blue.

A soft blue, a gentle blue—a peaceful blue with gold added in and cloud white that almost seemed angelic. A blue that felt honest to where we are, but still beautiful. If this Christmas was going to be our first without her, then the color would reflect that truth—but with warmth, not sadness.
As I opened my bins of ribbons and florals, the soft blues practically jumped into my hands—dusty blues, frosted blues, winter blues. Paired with snowy whites and beautiful gold, the house began to glow with a quiet sort of comfort.
Blues have a way of wrapping the heart instead of overwhelming it. They don’t shout “holiday cheer”—they whisper peace.
There’s something incredibly grounding about decorating with faux flowers. They bring beauty without demanding attention, and they stay bright through the entire season—just quietly offering calm.
Our handmade wreaths, custom florals swags and soft blue holiday decorations became more than decor — they became a part of healing. They made the season feel honest, warm and full of grace.
As I worked, I felt her everywhere. Not in a heavy way, but in a “we were so lucky to love her” way.

For Anyone Going Through Loss This Season
If you’re facing the holidays without someone you love, I hope you feel a little extra comfort this season. It’s okay to take things gently and to let your celebrations look different. You are not alone. I’m sending you a big virtual hug.
Here’s what I learned this year:
You don’t have to pretend you’re okay to create beauty. You don’t have to force joy for the holidays to still feel meaningful. And you don’t have to “move on”—you can move through with love. Let your decorating reflect where your heart is. Choose colors that comfort you. Add touches that honor the memories, not hide them. Create spaces that feel peaceful, not pressured. Grief and gratitude can absolutely exist in the same room. In fact, they often do.
This holiday season, instead of trying to pretend everything was normal, I honored the truth: We miss her. We love her. And we are grateful—so grateful — for every year we had.
The blue décor is my way of saying: “We feel this. We acknowledge it. But we’re still celebrating. We’re still giving thanks.” And somehow, that makes this season feel full of peace and most certainly a lot of love.
