Adding a heart to your wreath, swag, lantern or floral arrangement makes your creation personal and stands out in a warm, inviting way. Want to learn how? We’ll look into various options. Learn how to make them and how to attach them. No matter which one you prefer we hope you’ll enjoy the journey of the heart in all types and styles. My goal in this blog post is to make this a simple floral design and let the heart pop from the floral portion. Let’s start with the heart options and build out from there.
Heart Choices

- Stuffed hearts :- As you can see from the collage, I am totally drawn to stuffed hearts. Keep them simple by keeping it fabric only, add an overlay for a shabby chic look or use felt for more of a home spun vibe, use left over scrap fabric for a quilted look. There are so many options. Your toughest decision may just be deciding which heart you want to make first.
- Wood palette :- I love this option because wood is so versatile. You can really get creative here. Paint it for a stand out look, age it with sand paper or glazes, stencil it to add a message or leave it just the way it is for an organic or farmhouse look. You could decoupage letters and cutouts for a 1920’s Art Deco look.
- Fabric over a form :- Taking any form that is in the shape of a heart. It can be wood, mdf, styrofoam, or an old heart shaped sign that you want to repurpose. Using quilt batting to puff out the heart, draping fabric over it for an elegant look.
- Ready Made Hearts

This option can be tons of fun. There are a lot of really pretty options to choose from. Manufacturer’s have gotten the memo. We love big, fancy hearts to put in our design.
Here are a few I found. See what you think.
This one is sold on Etsy, from Amy with Ba Bam Wreaths:

Wreath bases mix and match. These are the two that I use.
Grapevine base
Grapevine wreath bases have been the standard go to wreath base for years. Easy to attach item stems and greenery with a glue gun or using floral wire.
You can easily attach signs and wreath attachments by anchoring them into the grapevine. The only thing you have to be careful of is to be sure that they aren’t attached too tightly or they will be hidden in the wreath and not stand out.
Pine Swag
When I purchase these I do so more for the base than the greenery. I cut a lot of the pine out and replace it with other greenery. In Christmas and winter wreaths I’m more likely to leave more pine since that is part of the design.
I hope you will enjoy incorporating some hearts on your own designs. I know I totally enjoy using them and hope you will to.
